My love for video and photography stemmed from my love for traveling. Born and raised in the small northern California town of Chico, I never had any knowledge or interest in the world outside of America. I was the typical high school athlete caught up in all the hurrah of a small town environment. That was until a French class trip took me to Europe for 2 weeks when I was 16. Little did I know, this trip would be the first step in a whole new life direction for me. It sparked an interest for seeing the world and meeting people from foreign cultures that runs vibrantly through my veins today.
Each step along the way has led to a bigger, more adventurous journey. As soon as I graduated high school in 2008, I went for one month backpacking throughout Europe on my own. Upon returning to California and playing one year of college baseball at Shasta College, I moved to Germany in 2010 where I studied at the Deggendorf University of Applied Sciences and played for a semi-professional German baseball team. In this year inGermany, I made hundreds of friends from all corners of the world, even some countries which I had to look up on a map. I was fortunate enough to visit 23 European countries during this ERASMUS year while gaining a true understanding and awareness for people, languages, cultures and life that had been so foreign to me before. The friends I made during this 2010 have developed into life-long relationships and a good number of us have managed to meet again in places all over the world. I also became a master at budget traveling and had my fair share of sleeping in airports in Spain, train stations in Portugal and tents in Scandinavia. I created a blog to document what I labeled at the time as “The Most Amazing Year of My Life” which can be found at: http://davidofcali.wordpress.com/
Returning to California in 2011 to finish my Bachelors in Business at Chico State, I was fortunate enough to visit a friend in Brazil. It was this trip to Brazil when I realized that videos transferred the emotions and experiences more clearly than photos so I captured my journeys through the Amazon to create my first attempt at a travel video: Amazon Discovered. I knew that many of my friends and family would never have the chance to experience first-hand these exotic far-off locations which I was exploring so I dove further into making videos. The natural evolution and development of my video making skills took its time but after filming my first true documentary Russia Discovered along the Trans-Siberian Railway entirely on a Sony Cybershot-Hx9v hand-held point-and-shoot camera, I finally graduated to Sony-Nex Compact Systems and DSLRs.
Following the completion of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the filming of Russia Discovered, I started my Masters in International Business in Nuremberg, Germany, with an exchange semester back in Russia. While studying in St. Petersburg, Russia, I took part in Jauntaroo's Best Job Around the World Contest. With plans for my 2015: World As One Film already in the works, it was as if this job offer from Jauntaroo was tailer made for me. While I would ultimately take 10th place out of 3,000+ international applicants and consequently not score the position up for grabs, it would a rewarding experience from which I developed my filming and editing techniques greatly and experienced first handedly how much support I could rally behind me. In a matter of only 6 weeks I was able to collect over 10,000 votes through the use of social media, newspapers and news channels. I look to carry this support on into my own project, the 2015: World As One Film which will document the biggest journey of my life: 1 year around the entire world capturing the experience in various forms, better than I ever have before, to share this with the rest of the world, so that everyone can travel around the world vicariously through my works. Ultimately, however, the film is not about me, rather, the people I come across while on my journey. It is my goal to show my audience through this work the biggest realization I've had through traveling: Everyone out in the world, no matter what their race, religion, background or color, is looking for similar things from life. These differences on the surface, but similarities at the core are what I will sequentially show in my 2015: World As One Film.
Why “World As One Media”?
Through my travels to over 30 different countries there has been one common theme: No matter where you are from, people all over the world are similar at the core. We all want to be happy, we all want to fall in love, we all want to do good for our families. Through my 2015: World As One Film, I hope to show just that to you too.
